If you are uncomfortable with bones, you can substitute chicken for chicken
backs or plain turkey for turkey necks. OTB mix has bone in it so your dog will be getting some bone.

If you feel your pup has trouble digesting bone then do the marrow bones. They are so hard, your pup will not be able to eat them, but he will gnaw on them endlessly which will remove plaque from his teeth and will supply some calcium as well as endless entertainment.

Feel free to only feed your dog a pre-made raw food diet. It is well designed and will supply all the nutrients. You do not have to make it yourself anymore. So do what works for you. We are just giving you options.

MAKING RAW FOOD YOURSELF

You can feed some kind of bone in the morning like a raw chicken back or whole raw fish (FYI, your dog will never choke on a fish bone) or some turkey necks or chicken necks, or even a raw marrow bone. You can order these things in large quantities from your local butcher or supermarket and then thaw and bag them in ziploc bags just like you did the food. A chicken back makes a great breakfast. In the evening do a regular meal  WITHOUT BONE. Giving your dog too much bone can sometimes result in constipation or diarrhea. So do not feed OTB mix twice a day as it has bone in it. You will want to do plain beef, venison, duck or rabbit, or even canned fish is good and add some veggies and kefir for the evening meal. We like tripe for our dogs and if you decide when your pup is older to buy the 12 ½ pound bags of beef from us, it already has tripe in it. It has a strong odor so do not think the meat is bad.

Add vegetables to this beef mix and you can add Kefir, an excellent source of probiotics.

You do not have to do extra bone every day; three times a week is fine. Oil is good too, like salmon oil, or salmon/pollock oil. cod liver oil, and even some raw garlic which most dogs love. They have recently discovered that Pollock has taurine, which is excellent for preventing cardiomyopathy in dogs.

Fruit is good too. A little banana, apple, pear, berries; your dog will have his/her favorites.

If your pup develops diarrhea or constipation, canned, organic 100% pumpkin from the health food store or if not available, Libby’s is fine. Make sure it is all pumpkin and not pie filler. A tablespoon in their food every day should clear it up in a few days.

SWITCHING FOODS

We will not recommend any dog food. They are all overly processed, do not have an  expiration date so you have no idea how long it has been sitting on the shelf and they are made with inferior ingredients to meet the corporation’s bottom line. A dog was not designed to eat over processed food put together by humans. They are not designed to eat grains but even those dog foods without grain still are over-processed with all of the nutrients cooked out of them. This diet is attempting to repeat the wild. In the wild, they would eat any meat they could find, (wolves mainly subsist on mice) and they graze on bushes and grasses, and grab any fruit they can. Feeding them dog food is equivalent to feeding your kids only processed food, nothing fresh. We know that most of you would not feed yourself or your kids only processed food. Dogs are mammals just like us. They need fresh food. Your leftovers are great too and cooked fresh food is also fine. Raw food has more nutrients and is what they were designed to eat, but if you feel strongly about cooking food for your dog, go ahead. It is far better than dog food.
